Why your kitten needs kitten food

Many cat owners assume that regular cat food is suitable for their kitten. After all, cat food is just cat food isn’t it?

Not exactly.

Although it may seem like a strange thing to say, your kitten is not a cat. In fact, kittens have vastly different nutritional needs to those of an adult cat.

In this article, you’ll discover why a specially tailored diet for kittens can help to give a great start in life.

What happens during kittenhood?

Kittenhood is full of learning curves, new encounters, milestones, and developmental changes.

In their first year of life, kittens go through a period of intense growth and rapid development before reaching physical maturity.

At around 2 weeks old, your kitten’s milk teeth will grow in and they will start making their first efforts to stand up.

After a month or so, your kitten will start sleeping less and become more active. At this time, they will be playing, exploring, learning socialisation skills, and growing very quickly.

At about 4 months of age, your kitten will be gaining approximately up to 30g a day, so be sure to follow the on-pack feeding guide at mealtimes to ensure healthy weight management.

Nutritional support for each stage of growth

Kitten food is specially formulated to provide kittens with the nutrients they need to grow and develop into a healthy cat.

As your kitten develops, so do their nutritional needs. ROYAL CANIN®’s kitten-specific formulas are specially tailored to support your kitten’s health at each stage of kittenhood and beyond.

Neonatal: Birth – 4 weeks

ROYAL CANIN® Babycat Milk is suitable from birth to weaning and supports harmonious growth. What’s more, the exclusion of starch and inclusion of highly digestible proteins in this formula helps to support good digestive health.

Weaning: 1– 4 months

ROYAL CANIN® Mother & Babycat is suitable for a mother cat and her kittens. A kitten’s milk teeth will have grown in by this point, making this diet perfect for facilitating the transition from milk over to solid food.

Sustained growth: 2 – 12 months

ROYAL CANIN® Kitten is available as kibble or as wet food in a gravy or jelly. This specially tailored formula helps to support your kitten’s natural defences while their immune system is still developing. What’s more, specially selected nutrients are included to support healthy growth and muscle development.
